„Haben Sie auch schon mal eine neue Art beschrieben?“, ist eine häufig gestellte Frage im Anschluss eines populärwissenschaftlichen Vortrages. Senckenberg-Forscher, die sich mit den Wirbellosen beschäftigen (z. B. mit Insekten, Spinnen tieren, Krebsen oder Schnecken), können da nur schmunzeln.
Meist reicht nämlich ein Forscherleben nicht aus, um alle neuen Arten zu beschreiben. Bei den Wirbeltieren hingegen ist es eher etwas Besonderes, eine unbeschriebene Art als solche zu erkennen. Und dabei wird schnell klar, dass die Illustration oder textliche Beschreibung nicht die eigentliche Arbeit darstellt. Der Großteil besteht aus aufwändiger Spürarbeit, bevor sich ein Wissenschaftler sicher sein kann, dass er kein Synonym beschreibt, also einen Namen für eine Art vergibt, die bereits vorher schon benannt wurde.
Egal aus welcher Tier- oder Pflanzengruppe eine Art stammt: es hängt noch heute der sehnsuchtsvolle Traum des Menschen daran, Unentdecktes zum ersten Mal in Händen zu halten, ein erstes Foto zu machen und das anderen mitzuteilen. Dabei ist die Beschreibung der Artenvielfalt unseres Planeten viel mehr als Kindheitsträume, stellen doch viele Arten Krankheitserreger oder Lebensmittel dar, beeinflussen unsere Lebensräume in einer ausgewogenen Art und Weise, dass Sie Lebensrundlage sind.
Auch in den Jahren 2009 und 2010 haben Senckenberg-Wissenschaftler wieder einen großen Teil dazu beigetragen, dass wir das erfassen und beschreiben, was wir schützen und für nachfol-gende Generationen erhalten wollen — sozusagen eine weltweite Inventur aller Lebensformen. So hat Axel Zarske aus dem Museum für Tierkunde in Dresden eine neue Fischart aus Süßgewässern von Peru beschrieben, den Kolibri-Salmler. Wie so oft bei einer Neubeschreibung ist über die Biologie und Lebensweise wenig bekannt, so dass morphologische Merkmale oftmals zur Charakterisierung genügen müssen, so z. B. der markante Geschlechtsdimorphismus.
Eine weitere Art kann vielleicht nicht mit der Farbenvielfalt des Fisches mithalten, schaffte jedoch den Sprung unter die Top Ten des Internationalen Ins-tituts für Artenerforschung: die Tafelberg-Springschabe . Klaus Klass, ebenfalls aus dem Senckenberg Museum für Tierkunde in Dresden, erkannte mit drei Kollegen, dass es sich sogar um eine bisher unbeschriebene Gattung handelte.
Die zwei Beispiele belegen, dass mit den neuen Kolleginnen und Kollegen in Müncheberg, Dresden und Görlitz im Jahr 2009 außerordentlich produktive Wissenschaftler zu Senckenberg stießen. Das spiegelt sich vor allem in der Gesamtzahl der neu beschriebenen Arten und dem plötzlichen Anstieg zwischen 2008 und 2009 wider. Insgesamt wurden so in den letzten fünf Jahren durch Senckenberg etwa 1000 neue Arten bekannt. Dabei liegt das Gewicht auf rezenten Tieren vom Festland.
leitet seit 2002 die Sektion Arachnologie und betreut kuratorisch Spinnentiere und Tausendfüßer. Sein Biologie-Studium absolvierte er in Köln mit den Fächern, Zoologie, Botanik und Geologie / Paläontologie. In seiner Promotion forschte er in Mainz an Riesenkrabbenspinnen des Himalaya. Feldforschung betreibt er hauptsächlich in Laos. 2012 organisierte er das erste Spinnensymposium in Laos. Seit 2000 hat er über 240 Spinnenarten beschrieben, darunter die mittlerweile berühmte Heteropoda maxima, die auch im Fokus einer BBC-Dokumentation steht.
